In the year 2010, Chen Jiagang choosed Real Estate industry, the engine of China's economic miracle, to be his subject
matter and launched a series of photography by the name Model Houses. He visited dozens of building all over the country and by borrowing the scenes from the various model houses, and through working with professional actors, he made up various dramatic scenes, and thus, get this series photography works, the Model Houses, finished.
The choice of model houses living shows the determination of Chen, which is that he is ready to restart on his way of
creation by building meticulously an ironic visual utopia. By showing thousands of beautiful women on the picture, he fabricates great stories about rich and powerful families, about their love and resentment. The luxury model houses
agglomerate Chinese wealth dreams during this economy transition time, and symbolise the identity and status of the successful model defined by the common customs of the society now. The model houses are like the artificial scenery in
drama and theme parks, which are only suitable for people to perform on it, or to acquire experiences. However they are not suitable for dwelling. The scenes in model houses release a lifelike atmosphere of intervetion and interference
of the public's daily experience. Chen's works are full of dramatic elements.They express the transition between truth and fake, unending struggle with soul and sex....all these reflect perfectly the mental disorder that occurred during this social transition of China. Artist's sharp criticism is making these real properties converted to a visualised context, and turned into something light and uncertain.
